What’s Really Going On When Anxiety Takes Over?

Anxiety is often the part we notice: racing thoughts, a tight chest, irritability, restlessness, avoidance, or the feeling that something bad is about to happen. Underneath the anxiety may be uncertainty, fear of failure, rejection, overstimulation, a past experience, or a need to feel safe and in control.

Knowing yourself means learning how anxiety shows up in your body, thoughts, and behavior. Do you overthink conversations, procrastinate, seek reassurance, shut down, or prepare for every possible outcome? Instead of immediately asking, “How do I make this stop?” try asking, “What is my anxiety trying to protect me from?”

Anxiety can provide information without being allowed to make every decision. You may need grounding, rest, clearer information, support, a boundary, or one manageable next step. The more you understand what is happening underneath your anxiety, the easier it becomes to respond to yourself with curiosity instead of criticism.
